Scripture: Galatians 2

Tonight I was enjoying the Word of God with a sister and I was re-enlightened concerning the fact of Christ replacing the law (from 2:11 through to 2:21). I’m rather impressed with this:

For I through law have died to law that I might live to God. (2:19)

Footnote 1 on this verses explains that “the law requires us, as sinners to die, and according to that requirement Christ died for us and with us. Hence, through law we have died in Christ and with Christ”. Hallelujah! According to the law, we have to die – and we have died with Christ! How so? The following verse says:

I am crucified with Christ; and it is no longer I who live, but it is Christ who lives in me; and the life which I now live in the flesh I live in faith, the faith of the Son of God, who loved me and gave Himself up for me. (2:20)

This verse was another re-eye-opener for me. How wonderful it is that we have died with Christ, and now live with Christ! Footnote 1 shares that “this explains how it is that through law we have died to law. When Christ was crucified, according to God’s economy we were included in Him. This is an accomplished fact.”

I was also impressed with the second footnote, where I was enlightened to see that “not I but Christ” does not mean that we no longer live, in the sense that Christ is living instead of us. Actually, Christ is joined to our life and thus we live one live and one living! This is what can be defined as the organic union between God and man, accomplished through Christ resurrection to become the life-giving Spirit to enter into us (1 Corinthians 15:45b)!

Finally, I also enjoyed that the life that we live today is “not by sight not by feeling” but by the divine life, which is lived out by faith, in particular the exercise of faith! Hence, this life which we live with Christ is according to the divine life in faith!

Lord, strengthen our faith! Praise You for replacing the law! Thank You that You loved us and gave Yourself up for us – that we would die together with You and live together with You!
